Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

To let you experience the performance of the WireGuard protocol (and privacy) the TunSafe project hosts a few high-bandwidth VPN servers.

Another important reason why we spend time and resources on maintaining this VPN service is that because the back-end is powered by TunSafe's implementation of WireGuard it allows us to verify stability and identify any problems and bottlenecks in the code under real conditions. So any improvement that we can get in TunSafe's codebase using feedback from hosting this service will benefit all WireGuard users around the world using the TunSafe software.

So do not hesitate to send a lot of traffic through these servers. Especially on the servers with 10Gbit uplink.

Locations

Amsterdam / Netherlands
Stockholm / Sweden
Bucharest / Romania
New-York / US
Düsseldorf / Germany
Helsinki / Finland

Go to http://www.tunsafe.com/vpn to create a configuration file to use in TunSafe / WireGuard.

Feel free to wish where we should place another server.

News

2018-09-29: Server in Bucharest / Romania is upgraded to latest backend-version and now also listen on all ports.
2018-09-23: Version 2.0 of our VPN-backend is online. Now with multi-hop support where the user can change the exit-point within seconds via pubkey settings on the VPN page, without the need to reconnect Tunsafe/WireGuard.
1 x 1Gbit/s port up in Helsinki / Finland. Server in Düsseldorf / Germany is dead waiting for new hardware.
2018-09-14: 1 x 10Gbit/s port up in Amsterdam / Netherlands.
2018-08-13: 1 x 1Gbit/s port up in Düsseldorf / Germany.
2018-07-05: 1 x 1Gbit/s port up in Bucharest / Romania and 1 x 1Gbit/s port up in New-York / US.
2018-06-17: We have decided to add a second server close to AMS-IX which is the second biggest Internet Exchange point in the world. 1 x 1Gbit/s port up in Amsterdam / Netherlands.
2018-06-10: The first VPN server is up and we're happy to have a finished prototype of the TunSafe Linux kernel module to host it. 4 x 100Mbit/s ports up in Stockholm / Sweden to start with.

East coast would be ideal, but I'd be happy with a server anywhere in the US!

testmy.net results. Pretty impressive, considering their server is in New York and the tunsafe server is in Amsterdam:

Download :: 64.2 Mbps 8 MB/s

25% faster than my average New York, NY NL 51.5 Mbps
419% faster than my host average 12.4 Mbps
215% faster than the NL average 20.4 Mbps
TMN 256% faster than Index Speed 18 Mbps

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

Could you please add option for common ports? For example - 443, 80, 993 and etc. Company firewalls or ISPs are blocking unusual ports.

Thanks! Here is a result from testmy.net:

190% faster than the US average 35.2 Mbps
298% faster than Index Speed 25.6 Mbps

Thanks for the speed report. It would be interesting to configure so that users can connect to the NY as entry-point and have NL as exit-point, or vice versa, and redo the tests.

Those servers are quite fast. Could you also place one in UK?

Would love to do that. The project would require a few more sponsors that could contribute to financing.

Currently implementing multihop support and the first prototype (and entry-point) will be launched on a server in Finland soon as a bunch of happy Finns has funded smile

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

This service doesn't seem to route IPv6, which allows for IPv6 leaks. Any plans to work on that?

Edit: In the meantime, I've found a good-enough means to disable IPv6 in Android and on my desktop on-demand. Still, Azire was able to accomplish this even before they recently went fully commercial.

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

Yep, the service does not assign IPv6 addresses at the moment. So users on a dual-stack network should use a client with a kill-switch feature based on FW-rules to prevent leaks. Or disable IPv6.

We'll enable dual-stack as soon as we have completed some other features that currently have higher priority.

How much of a donation are we talking? I would chip in 5 euros a month if other people interested in a 10Gbps UK server would do the same.

Edit: BTW I already just donated 25 Euro. I picked the amount of 5 Euros/month because that's what I already pay other providers for 10Gbps nodes in various countries, so it's not worth it *to me* to pay more than that for UK node.

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

Finland server gone!! Please return the it! The second best option would be a 10Gbps server in Stockholm. Why is Sweden, your home country, so slow anyway?? Also would appreciate good analysis of donation amounts like how much per month is enough.

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

The hosting provider we used in Finland, Hetzner, proved not suitable for service. They got very strict rules regarding bad activity from the server.
We are working to replace it with a 10Gbit server in Sweden. As we are paying all servers from our own pockets, we'll have to find some way to let people help us with that long-term.

Re: Free VPN service hosted by the TunSafe project (2018-09-29)

So sad Hetzner is too tight as it's quite cheap. Mullvad seems to be in Suomicom's network here. Anyway, good news you guys are looking at Sweden replacement. If we get to vote, it's in Stockholm smile

Hi @wiggo. Thanks for providing this great service.
Seems nl-naa1-v2 is down.

Is it from Hetzner too?

by the way, I appreciate your great work so much for providing this service free of charge for us.
